The End of Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood: a nonprofit organization that Republicans have been after to defund. This past election, gave rise to one of the biggest controversies of our time and that is the defunding, and possibly even replacement, of Planned Parenthood. Its no secret that it has always been a top priority of Republicans to get rid of Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides through more than six hundred clinics across the nation to millions of patients in poverty. In the past, attempts for the program to be defunded have failed due to President Obama’s veto on the bill the House and Senate tried to pass last year. However, this year with President Trump, a republican, in office, the issue of the program’ s defunding is escalating quicker than ever.
Planned Parenthood’s services include reproductive health care education such as sex-ed, and health care services (especially for low-income families) such as STD treatments, abortions and other women’s health care services. With all of these services, Planned Parenthood’s underlying goal is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, and many people fail to realize that only more problems will root from the defending of such an organization. With Planned Parenthood removed or replaced, many families and women across the nation would suffer and have nowhere to turn to for aid.
One of the biggest issue and maybe only issues, members of the Congress have with the program is that they provide and are affiliated with abortions. Although protected constitutionally, Republicans want to get rid of Planned Parenthood, and consequently, get rid of abortions. What they neglect to realize is that simply getting rid of the program (which provides legal abortions) does not get rid of abortions at all. After the program is cut, women will still continue to have unwanted pregnancies (for example, is result of rape or a violent relationship) in which they will turn to illegal abortions if they can’t provide for a baby since they have nowhere else to go. Not only can this be very dangerous, but it can also cause serious societal issues.
Along with providing legal abortions, Planned Parenthood also educates about the dangers of sex at an early age, STD’s and contraception, all of which help expose and educated the youth about unwanted pregnancy and in turn, reduce it.

Sumin, I find your argument on President Trump and his poor cabinet choices very interesting and true. Trump has created himself quite an image on social media and often times we all get carried away by that. Instead, we should be focusing on how to prevent any detrimental laws from passing that will damage the future of our youth. In relation to education, as you mentioned Sumin, Betsy DeVos, our secretary of education supports and rallies for private schooling which represents a very slim number of our youth today with a majority of the kids getting their education from public schools. With a office member like her, it is vital that we take responsibility to ensure that students in public schools are not harmed or affected with any bills passed by her. Blog Stage 8

On Tuesday August 11 th , one of my classmates wrote a piece titled, “ Give Youth a Voice Expansion ” as part of her blog called, “Young Minded Perspective of the U.S.” I found to relate and strongly agree with their argument on lowering the voting age in order to allow young adults (aged 16) to vote. The author makes several points to support this claim, such as stating that many kids at that age are currently learning about politics in classes and are already being exposed to adult situations, therefore making them more mature to vote than assumed by most adults. As the author mentioned, she thought that kids at age sixteen are learning about the government, and are therefore informed enough to vote.
